What is Nagios ?

Nagios is a host and network service monitoring tool designed to run under the Linux operating system to inform of the network problems as and when these occur by use of a monitoring daemon. The daemon runs intermittently to check on hosts and services by the network administrator as specified using external "plugins" and sends notifications out to the administrative contacts through various messaging systems like email, instant message, SMS, etc. The Nagios also works under most UNIX/LINUX variants.

The Nagios is maintained by Ethan Galstad who is it’s creator and lead developer. The Nagios is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 2 as published by the Free Software Foundation.
